Sketch Seattle's 1st Summer Season A Huge Hit!

Sketch Seattle had a wonderful summer schedule that guided students through 3 exciting locations. We had varying group sizes and weather for each of our workshops at Gas Works Park, Pike Place Market, and Pioneer Square.

Many students were able to join us for all 3 workshops, and it was fun to see the growth of each student as they progressed through the summer.

We've had a lot of emails and phone calls asking us if we are planning workshops for the fall, and at this point it looks like both Ron & Derek have busy schedules for their individual classes and events... We encourage you to keep in touch though, as the possibility of a pop-up workshop is always in the back of our minds.

Thanks everyone for a wonderful summer, and we look forward to seeing you again very soon... at Sketch Seattle! Here's a few pictures to enjoy from our Pike Place workshop July 19th, photos by Monica Holsinger Photography.

Visit to Gas Works Park & Fremont

Friday Ron and I spent some time at each of this summer's Sketch Seattle workshop locations.

First we hit Gas Works Park, an amazing public space that has a little bit of everything. This park is very unique. This will be our first location and it's a great place to get students comfortable with sketching in

Ron Stocke sketching at Gas Works Park in February.

Derek Gundy finds an interesting structure to sketch beneath.

The skyline of Seattle is visible from most parts of the park, and it makes both a dramatic backdrop and an exciting main subject for drawing & painting.

Gas Works park contains remnants of the sole remaining coal gasification plant in the US. The plant operated from 1906 to 1956, and was bought by the City of Seattle for park purposes in 1962. The park opened to the public in 1975. These old structures are fascinating and one has to wonder exactly how these parts all worked together at one point.

It is really fun to get up close with some of these parts that fit together, it really is straight out of a science fiction movie.

Perhaps this is an air intake? I have no idea. Cool though!
From Gas Works Park, we took a short drive to Fremont, where we hope to spend the second half of the workshop. On the day of the workshop, we'll meet at the Lenin Statue, and from there we may go sketch the bridge, or several of Fremont's interesting intersections or alleyways.

The Lenin Statue makes a great meeting place in the heart of Fremont.
Table and chairs will be a great place to gather for a
final discussion at the end of the day.
Fremont has exceptional  character as you will quickly see. Just a great fun place to hang out and sketch.

You can make sketching into rocket science if you want....

On the bridge, looking at the other bridge...great colors & structure.

Sketch Seattle with Ron Stocke & Derek Gundy

Please join us for a summer schedule of adventurous sketching workshops at various locations around the beautiful city of Seattle, Washington.

Using pencil, pen, & light watercolor, you'll learn how to do simplified thumbnail sketches, layout your values (lights & darks), and capture the broad view of your subject. Ron and I will guide you throughout the day, starting loose, and then pulling your sketches together with the final details.

Sketchbooks are the absolute #1 most important tool an artist has at their disposal. And with these workshops you will receive a Bee Paper Super Deluxe Sketchbook absolutely free!

At this time our first sketchbook workshop is tentatively scheduled for Saturday June 28th, location & subject TBA. If you are interested in this and other sketchbook workshops, please email me at with any questions you may have.

Our new website  is in the works.... Stay tuned for more details!
